Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
